We are very pleased to welcome Sarah Fox, one of the leading English sopranos of her generation as our soloist, to perform the Four Last Songs of Richard Strauss. The Cathedral will be a prefect venue for such a powerful work, as it will for Butterworth’s Rhapsody: A Shropshire Lad, which opens the concert. Given Butterworth’s death at the Battle of the Somme in 1916, whilst serving in the Durham Light Infantry, his music has a particular poignancy.
Brahms’ beautiful Second Symphony completes the programme. The concert will be conducted by Aidan Oliver, who is making a welcome return to us and who will no doubt have had a busy summer as the newly appointed Director of the Edinburgh Festival Chorus.
