Orchestra North East is pleased to announce that the first concert of the 2019-2020 season will be in Durham Cathedral at 7.30pm on Saturday October 5th.
Wagner: Overture to Die Meistersinger
Elgar: Variations on an Original Theme (“Enigma”) op.36
Rachmaninov: Symphony no.3 in A Minor op. 44
Conductor: Philippe Bach
The Orchestra is very pleased to again welcome Philippe Bach to conduct us. Philippe, who is General Music Director of the prestigious Meiningen Opera in Germany, last conducted the Orchestra in 2012, and we are very much looking forward to working with him again.
Wagner’s majestic Overture The Mastersingers of Nuremberg opens the programme and its full orchestral sound will suit the glorious surroundings of the Cathedral splendidly. Elgar’s deservedly popular Enigma Variations, with its inventive range of moods, all inspired by his friends is a major characteristic, attractive for audience and players alike.
The Third Symphony of Sergei Rachmaninov is one of his later compositions and is, arguably, something of a hidden gem of a symphony. Perhaps less familiar than his first two symphonies, it is nonetheless expressive and powerfully emotional, as Rachmaninov’s music can be, and its inventive exploration of orchestral colours is as delightful as it is masterful.
