Sunday April 22nd 2018 at 3pm. In the Gala Theatre Durham
Orchestra North East has been giving concerts in Durham for over thirty seasons and the Spring 2018 concert programme is one of significant first occasions, both of the music and of our guests.
In all its performances, the Orchestra has never before offered this particular music in our programmes. To lead us through it we are very pleased to welcome the distinguished conductor Monica Buckland.
The overture by Emilie Mayer, a female composer from the German Romantic era, is an especially enjoyable discovery. Dvorak’s beautifully melodious symphony, very typical of his music, is another hidden gem, although Rachmaninov’s brilliant Variations, played for us by pianist Murray McLachlan, will need little introduction.
Emilie Mayer: Faust Overture, opus 46.
Sergei Rachmaninov: Variations on a Theme of Paganini
Antonin Dvorak: Symphony No.6.
Conductor: Monica Buckland
Soloist: Murray McLachlan
