Lyrics: Carol Ann Duffy
Music: Orlando Gough, Jessica Curry, Jonathan Bates
Originally commissioned by the Northern Regional Brass Band Trust in partnership with Durham County Council
A century after the end of the First World War, the anniversary is marked with a reprise of The Durham Hymns, originally premiering at Durham Cathedral during BRASS Festival 2016.
With specially commissioned lyrics by Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy, using the letters, diaries and experiences of real people living in the county during the war years as inspiration, The Durham Hymns are performed by the Reg Vardy Brass Band, the Centenary Community Choir, and celebrated choral ensemble, Voices of Hope. The Durham Hymns not only commemorate the sacrifice of those who died, but the courage and resilience of those left behind.
This event also sees the beginning of a community programme, using the performance as a starting point to interrogate the process of peace.
‘A simple moment of pleasure became a thing of enduring beauty by deceptively simple means – the most powerful art often seems simple but can take great skill to achieve’ The Journal
‘This was a performance of distinction, beautifully rehearsed, superbly conducted and magnificently played’ The Church Times
