Celebrate this year’s Heritage Open Days with free events at Durham Cathedral and explore spaces usually closed to members of the public.
Across both Saturdays of the Heritage Open Days, visitors will be granted access to unique hidden areas of the Cathedral.
The allotment garden on the South Bailey, where the Cathedral grows flowers for display and cultivates plants for the Cathedral grounds, will be open to the public. The Cathedral gardeners will be on hand to answer questions. The garden is only open on Saturday 8 September 10.00am - 4.00pm. Booking is not required to visit the allotment garden.
Visitors will be given a unique opportunity to see the rare medieval wall paintings which decorate the hallway of the Deanery in the Cathedral College. View the Deanery wall paintings on Saturday 8 September at 10.00am, 12.00noon and 2.00pm. As places are limited admission is by advanced booking only. Reserve a place at the Visitor Desk in the main Cathedral, telephone 0191 338 7178 or online.
Discover the Chapter House which will be especially open for the Heritage Open Days. This space is rarely open to the public as it is used on a daily basis by our clergy as a preparation space for services. It was originally where the daily business of the monastery was carried out. You might recognise the Chapter House as Professor McGonagall’s classroom in the first Harry Potter film. The Chapter House is only open on Saturday 15 September 10.00am - 2.00pm. Booking is not required to visit the Chapter House.
The Cathedral is open to visitors until 6.00pm Monday to Saturday and 5.30pm on Sundays.
