- Christmas InDurham
Kung Hei Fat Choi
Welcome the Chinese New Year of the Rat with celebrations and events in Durham on Saturday 1st February.
From 12.30pm onwards, the Traditional Lion Dance will wind its way through the streets, entertaining the crowds and bringing good fortune for the year ahead. Heralded by loud drums, you won't struggle to find it or follow it! Thanks to our performers from Oceans Apart Kung Fu Club who will be bringing the lion and the drums, and to children, staff and parents of Langley Moor Primary School - the children will be joining the procession and performing at each venue.
The lion's route is as follows (please note timings are approximate and may change without notice):
12.30pm Millennium Place - here, Mayor of Durham, Councillor Katie Corrigan, will be responsible for catching the lettuce thrown by the dragon, and ensuring good fortune for the city for the coming 12 months!
Followed by performances in:
Prince Bishops Shopping Centre
Durham Market Place
There are numerous other special events taking place to celebrate Chinese New Year in Durham City Centre.
Clayport Library will be hosting Chinese language taster sessions and story-telling.
